Giants host Western Provinces Badges

On Saturday, May 23rd Mitchells Plain-Giants hosted the 2015 Badges competition. Spectrum and Giants (Blouberg and Mitchells Plain) was the clubs that participated at the competition. 
The badges competition consists of three sections namely blue, yellow and red badge. Blue is the starting point and the difficult Increases as the colors increase. The skills pre-scribed for this competition are fundamental elements for gymnasts starting gymnastics however the elements may be basic but they are necessary as they lay the foundation for a solid gymnastics career.
Melaine Petersen a coach from Giants - Mitchells Plain says: “It was so much fun, the gymnast enjoyed it and I got to judge too”.
Melaine is a new o the sport however her passion for the sport drives her.
This competition motivates children at the beginner stage to participate and enjoy the sport.  At the competition 30 gymnasts competed in various colours and all received their badges.
Congratulations to the gymnasts, parents and coaches and a special thank you to Donna, Maggie and the team from Mitchells Plain for organising the competition and for encouraging participation in gymnastics.

Young and talented, Nicole tells all
Twenty – one year old Nicole Dirk an ex-gymnast, now student, coach and professional athlete is a role model to all the young girls at Giants. 
Nicole is striving towards obtaining her BA Sports, recreation and exercise science degree at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). Apart from being a full time student Nicole is a member of the UWC athletics club and her specialities are Long Jump and Triple Jump, not only is she a competitive athlete but she is a part time coach at the Giants.
Her gymnastics career started at the age of seven and she went on to obtaining her South African Federation colours. Nicole’s gymnastics career came to an end in 2006 however she continued to challenge herself by starting a new adventure by joining the Bellville athletics club.
Nicole’s passion for gymnastics has always been brewing within her even though she was not participation in gymnastics. In June 2012, her passion made her return to her first love- gymnastics, when she joined the Mitchell’s Plain coaching team.
Do you enjoy being part of gymnastics? “Yes I do. It’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember” she said.
Her training schedules are Monday and Thursdays with her coach (Julie) and every alternate day she has to train by herself.  Apart from being so busy with campus and her training schedule she still managers to fit coaching in on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
How has it been balancing campus, coaching and training? “It is been tough, especially because of exams but I manage to balance my time considerably” says Nicole.
Do you have any motivational words for the gymnasts this competition season? “Just to go out there, to do their best and most important have fun and don’t stress.”
